Louisiana State Police Troop I is responding to an officer-involved shooting in Jeanerette that resulted in a Lafayette police officer succumbing to injuries.
According to a prepared statement, LSP detectives were notified shortly after 4:30 p.m. Thursday of a shooting on Hubertville Road near Martin Luther King Drive in Jeanerette.
The officer-involved shooting involved multiple law enforcement agencies, according to the statement. Investigators are working to gather information, and the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab is responding to process the scene.
According to the Lafayette Police Department, the officer killed was part of the SWAT Team that was requested after the Jeanerette City Marshal’s Office initially served the warrant.
During the operations, the suspect fired multiple shots at law enforcement. Four Lafayette Police Officers were injured. Two officers were shot and bullet fragments struck the other two officers.
All officers involved were transported to an area hospital. Three officers are currently in good condition with non-life-threatening injuries. As a result of the shooting, the fourth officer was killed in the line of duty.
Trooper Peggy Bourque said Thursday evening that a suspect in regard to the shooting is currently in custody, and LSP is still investigating.
“We can confirm we have a suspect in custody,” Bourque said.
Lafayette Mayor-President Monique Boulet, along with police departments all across Acadiana, issued a statement in support of the LPD and the officers involved in the incident.
“I want to express my deep gratitude for each and every one of our officers at the Lafayette Police Department,” Boulet said. “Their daily sacrifice and commitment to our community is powerful, selfless, and a big part of what makes us a great community. There are all hurting this evening, and I want them to know the city of Lafayette stands with them in grief and sorrow.
