- New Iberia Senior High band, softball and baseball players helped fill sandbags in three Teche Area locations.Among the helpers were Caroline Freman, Christopher Freman, Holden Hebert, Ian Archangel, Tyler Dupre, Lylia Boatman, Reece Miguel, Jacob St. Blanc, Lori Anna St. Blanc, D.J. Labit, Kelly Landry, Victoria Landry, Elizabeth Tauzin and Andrew Landry from the band. NISH baseball players included Dustin Menard, Kade Linn, Julio Perez, Luke Landry, Kylan Theriot, Evan Hebert, Ty Spurlock, Christian Thomas, Noah Arton, Dravyn Smith and Braidyn Castille. NISH softball players included Kailyn Head and Emily Mendoza. NISH cross country member was Hunter Landry. Some of the NISH football players helping were Matthew Parker, Gage Thibodeaux, Cristian Engle, Trent Louviere, Carlos Davenport and Colby Williams.
Emergencies or natural disasters traditionally bring out the community volunteers but the first storm of the 2019 hurricane season brought the youth of at least two area schools into action. Loreauville High School football coach Terry Martin said his team has had a lot of support from Mayor Brad Clifton, so when he asked for volunteers to help out at the sandbag station, more than 25 team players and family members pitched in. Some as early as Thursday night actually delivered bags. One Catholic High School stickered-automobile was serviced and the driver located the coach to make a donation allowing him to purchase water for the crew. Rivalry is put aside when needs abound.
Also at three different locations around Iberia Parish were the band, various sports teams and students from New Iberia Senior High. The NISH band headed to Lydia, while others assisted at the Old Jeanerette Road fire station and another facility.
Although other groups and schools may have participated, today’s photos were submitted to The Daily Iberia to show community spirit — thanks to all who assisted throughout the weekend.
