Julianna Miguez, daughter of Louisiana State Senator Blake Miguez, has once again claimed top honors in the pinewood derby races, this time at the Scout-O-Rama event held at the Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette.
Earlier this year, Julianna took home another impressive win at Cub Scout Pack 463’s pinewood derby after just one month in the scouts. This time, Julianna’s win came against the entire scouting region.
The pinewood derby, first introduced to the scouts in 1953 by a Cubmaster from California, is one of the organization’s most anticipated events of the year. Each scout is tasked with building their own unpowered, unmanned miniature cars from wood blocks. While outside help is allowed, the scouts are encouraged to take the lead in all aspects of the event, from designing and building the car to racing it against other scouts.
Julianna’s father, Blake, was an accomplished scout in his own right, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Miguez was unable to attend the event in Lafayette this year due to competing in the United States Practical Shooting Association’s U.S. Open Nationals competition. Miguez placed 4th at the event.
