Six student-athletes from Westgate High School signed letters of intent to continue their athletic and academic careers during Wednesday’s National Signing Day ceremony.
Tavias Gordon and A’Trevion Netter signed with Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas. Dytraevous Lively and Bryant Leon Jr. inked with Blinn College in Brenham, Texas, while
Peyton Knatt and Jatyri Rankins will be headed to the West Coast to attend San Bernardino Valley College in San Bernardino, California.
Dytraevous Lively, known as Spida to the Westgate faithful, plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering while playing football at Blinn. Blinn College gained national attention a decade ago when, in 2009, future Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton transferred from Florida. Newton spent a year at Blinn, winning the 2009 junior college national championship before transferring to Auburn and eventually the NFL. Lively said he hopes that he can also use Blinn College as a place to grow his game before making the jump to a Division 1 program.
“I’m happy that I have the opportunity to play at the next level. I’m ready for it,” he said. “I’m hoping that I can shine (at Blinn) and then go to a D1 school and make a career out of it.”
Joining Lively and Leon in Texas will be Tavias Gordon, who head coach Ryan Antoine said will go down as one of the top running backs in Westgate history. Gordon spent his senior season playing several different positions for the Tigers due to an injury crisis on offense, something that he said gives him a leg up when making the transition to the next level.
“It helped me to develop my confidence, knowing that something can happen anytime with a team and I can be there to carry them,” Gordon said. “Being called one of the best running backs to come through Westgate is a big accomplishment, especially given the talent that has been here.”
For senior offensive lineman Peyton Knatt, signing to continue his playing career is a dream come true.
“I feel like this is God’s plan. Since we were younger, this has been a dream of ours, and dreams come true,” he said. “(San Bernadino) is an opportunity to get away from New Iberia and experience something new while showing my talents.”
The Tigers’ 2025 class also includes two players who will be playing on Division 1 teams next season. Jamboree Antotoine signed with Miami earlier in the school year and has already begun attending classes in Florida. Mississippi State secured the services of wide receiver Davian Jackson on early signing day in December.
Head coach Ryan Antoine said he expects three additional players to sign letters of intent in the coming months, bringing the total number of signings to 11 for the 2025 class.
