In a 24-hour span over the weekend, Catholic High picked up two quality wins to improve its winning streak to five games.

CHS, which has won eight of its last nine with a loss to Class 5A Catholic-Baton Rouge (25-2), stayed perfect in District 7-2A with a 48-46 win over defending Division IV nonselect state champion Franklin Senior High on Friday.

On Saturday at Brad Boyd’s Cajundome Classic, the Panthers (15-8, 5-0) rallied from a 12-point deficit to win going away (56-47) over Northwest, which was a No. 5 seed in last year’s Division II nonselect bracket and features national recruit Markez Davis.

Davis, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, scored 17 points in the first half with four 3-pointers for the Raiders (11-11), who scored 13 of the last 15 points in the first quarter. He was held without a point in the second half.

“We denied him all the way,” CHS coach Dylan Vincent said. “I challenged Karon Eugene and ‘Agent Zero’ (Layton Mitchell). To go from 17 points in the first half to zero in the second half. That’s how we won.”

After Northwest scored the opening basket of the second half, CHS went on a 9-0 run. Chris Green, who made his final four shots from the field, hit a 3-pointer. Tristan Lewis (12 points) made two buckets, and Joab Trosclair added two points. Eugene, who slammed home a dunk at the final buzzer, tied the game at 37-37 with a lay-up.

“We’ve been in so many tough challenges,” Vincent said. “At that point, that’s nothing (to rally from a large deficit). I told them, ‘Let’s walk them down. We’re good.”

Green, a senior forward, converted a 3-point play with 1:34 remaining for a 50-44 CHS lead and finished with 11 points.

“I got the open shots and coach kept telling me to take them,” Green said. “Usually, I’m taking charges and playing defense, but coach said to take the opportunity, and I took it.”

Senior point guard Jaiden Mitchell, who scored 14 points, made all three of his shots from the field in the second quarter and drained two free throws in the fourth quarter. He scored 17 points in the win over Franklin.

‘When I took this job, everybody talked about Jaiden Mitchell,” Vincent said. “He has shown up every time and showed me how good he is. He rises to the challenge. He’s our leader and the captain of our team.”

Lewis scored nine points against Franklin (16-5, 4-2). Trosclair chipped in eight, and Eugene (10 points) made the game-winning shot at the buzzer on a mid-range jumper.

“The toughest thing about last night was that we want every game to be a blowout,” Vincent said of the win over FSH. “I’m that type.”

“In the district, I want to set a standard. I want to set a precedent.”

The Panthers take on Delcambre (1-16, 0-4) and Loreauville (13-7, 2-2) this week.

Jylon Jackson led Franklin with 14 points. Jeremiah Gray scored nine, and Mark Jones had eight points. The Hornets made 5 of 14 free throws, while the Panthers connected on 13 of 21.
