Two new council members were elected to the Iberia Parish Council on Saturday and two other candidates will enter into a November runoff.
Newcomers David Larson II and Marty Trahan will enter into a runoff on Nov. 19 for the District 13 seat. Third candidate Jody Suire was ousted on Saturday with 21 percent, or 266 votes.
The seat was vacated by Larry Richard.
Trahan received 586 votes at 46 percent of the vote and Larson received 416 votes at 33 percent. Both candidates have commended each other on holding “clean” campaigns.
“It was most definitely a good, clean race,” Larson said Saturday. “In fact I called Marty and Jody yesterday and wished them good luck. No one went around trashing each other, we just met with folks and gave them our pitch and did the best we could.”
Larson said he is eager to get back on the campaign trail for the next few weeks, as is Trahan who said he is “ready to roll.”
“I’m ready to hit the road and just let the best man win,” Trahan said. His campaign party was held at home among family and friends and a pot of chicken and sausage gumbo, he said.
It was a winning election year for six incumbents who were vying to retain their seats, with the exception of John Berard, who lost the District 7 seat with 32 percent or 575 votes to David Ditch who received 68 percent or 1,220 votes.
Berard has served one term on the Iberia Parish Council and said Saturday he “wasn’t surprised” he lost the election, noting his campaign contributions were meager compared to his opponent’s.
“Unfortunately sometimes elections are like a hog auction, you fail to the highest bidder,” Berard said. “But I think I brought a good battle. I want to thank the people in my district who supported me. I have no regrets and I think I’ve served this district honorably.”
Newcomer Ricky Gonsoulin also is a newcomer to the council in winning the District 8 seat. He won with 1,283 votes, or 80 percent, against Darren Sophus, who received 320 votes at 20 percent of the vote.
The seat was vacated by Barry Verrett.
Incumbent Thomas Landry defeated Eddie Paul Romero for the District 3 seat. Troy Comeaux will serve another term for District 5 after beating Tim Gautreau. Glenn Romero was re-elected to the District 9 seat against challenger Jeff Broussard. Roger Duncan will continue serving as the District 10 councilmen after defeating Carl Meche, and Aquicline Rener Arnold won the District 12 seat against Classie “Sticky” Charles.
