ST. MARTINVILLE — There will be a runoff between Clay Courville, 51, and Chris Tauzin, 43, for the District 5 seat in St. Martin Parish. Courville received 481 votes, 26 percent, and Tauzin received 604 votes, 33 percent. Both are fresh faces vying to fill the void left by Lloyd “Red” Higginbotham, who was forced out by term limits.

The runoff will take place on Nov. 19.

Also, there will be a new councilman from District 4. Neil Thibodeaux, 51, beat incumbent Mike Capritto Jr., 55.

Thibodeaux received 1,041 votes, for 54 percent of the vote, and Capritto received 884 votes, for 46 percent, according to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s website.

Back in April, Capritto was appointed to the post. Thibodeaux said that those appointed to the position do not usually run for re-election.

However, in August, Capritto decided to run despite that norm. Also, Thibodeaux had run in the last election, four years ago, where he lost by a little more than 400 votes, he said.

Voter turnout was approximately 41 percent, said Tricia Hammon, supervisor of elections for St. Martin Parish.
