The Bossier Bearkats had trouble with their transportation during their near four-hour ride Thursday from North Louisiana to New Iberia for their round one Division III girls’ soccer playoff game against the fourth-seeded Catholic High Lady Panthers.
CHS, ranked third in the Louisiana High School Soccer Coaches poll, made it an even more miserable trip by dominating the Bearkats, not allowing a single shot on goal in taking a 10-0 win over Bossier. A bus breakdown had delayed the start of the game for more than an hour.
Taylor Lahasky had a hat trick and an assist and Taylor deLahoussaye added two goals to lead the Lady Panthers, who substituted frequently in the second half, so much so that every player got at least 20 minutes on the field, said CHS coach Brandon Francis. Catholic High led 7-0 at halftime and spent virtually the entire half on Bossier’s end of the field.
“It’s what I expected it would be,” said Francis. “It was good. The girls played well.”
And got off to a fast start against an overmatched 29th seed. Sydney Schwing got the scoring started just 1:39 into the game from about 12 yards out after taking a pass from Lahasky following a cross from Katelyn Guilbeau.
The Lady Panthers tacked on six more goals in the half, starting with Lahasky’s first goal off an assist by Madeline Vines at the 6:05 mark. Lauren deMahy made it 3-0 at the 12:29 mark with Lauren Barber assisting, and deLahoussaye scored her first goal off a pass from Sydney Lahasky at the 19-minute mark.
Vines then scored just under 27 minutes into the game with Camille Hebert getting the assist. DeLahoussaye knocked in a rebound 32:41 into the half and Taylor Lahasky knocked in a ball at the 38:22 mark that had bounded off Bossier goalkeeper Elise Reyes.
CHS had 24 additional shots on goal in the half, with 12 blocked and 12 wide of the mark. Bossier didn’t get the ball as far as Catholic High’s 18-yard box, and only went past midfield a couple of times.
“Our defense has played so outstanding,” said Francis. “One of our first goals was by a defender, Lauren deMany.”
Francis said some extra work in the rain during the week helped prepare the Lady Panthers. Catholic High’s strikers worked with the strikers coach during seventh period on taking both higher percentage shots and putting the shots on frame, and it paid off.
Hebert also did an outstanding job with corner kicks, said Francis. She took eight corner kicks — Bossier had none — and all were placed in position for CHS players to have a shot at putting a head or foot on the ball.
“Our corner kicks looked great,” said Francis. “She was outstanding.
“And of course, the Lahasky twins. K.K. (Katelyn) Freyou didn’t get much action (in goal) and neither did (Meredith) Musso.”
Freyou started in goal and Musso came in to start the second half. With no shots on goal the two were largely spectators.
Taylor Lahasky scored her third goal in the 49th minute, with Vines getting her second assist. Madeline LeBlanc (75:14) and Lexi Hebert (80:21) scored the final two goals as CHS played a little more conservatively in the second half with subs taking their turns on the pitch.
“We put certain restrictions on (after building the big lead),” said Francis. “We had to cross (the ball) and had to shoot outside the box in order to take a shot.”
Catholic High plays host to Riverside at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the second round. No. 13 seed Riverside beat No. 20 St. Charles, 4-3, on Thursday.
