Westgate, NISH advance to semifinal meeting

ST. MARTINVILLE — Westgate and New Iberia Senior High advanced to a Saturday semifinal matchup in the St. Martinville Holiday Shootout with wins Friday over Helen Cox and Houma Christian, respectively.
New Iberia beat Houma Christian 52-35 in the Yellow Jackets’ first game after drawing a first-round bye, and Westgate beat Helen Cox 63-55 later in the day.
Peabody beat Lafayette 84-57 on Friday to advance to a semifinal matchup against St. Martinville, a 71-30 winner over Franklin.
Westgate 65, Helen Cox 55
Westgate built a 36-24 halftime lead, only to see the Cougars rally to within 3 points on three separate occasions in the third quarter.
Trevontae Williams and Eddie Sims led a 10-2 run in the first 3½ minutes of the fourth quarter to push the Tigers’ lead back up to double digits, and it remained around there until Helen Cox answered with an 11-1 run to pull to within 57-53 at the 0:47 mark on Michael Christian’s 3-point shot.
WHS pulled away from there, extending its lead to 63-53 before a layup just before the buzzer made the final margin 8 points.
Sims led Westgate with 15 points, including back-to-back layups off steals that pushed the lead to 51-40 with 4:42 to go in the game. Williams had 14 points, including the first 4 of the final period on a free throw and a 3-point play in the opening 30 seconds of the quarter.
Kaleb Ratliff also had 14 points for Westgate, 10 in the second half. Jamel White aded 13 points and Sekentray James had 12 to put five Tigers in double figures.
Christian had 10 points for the Cougars. Marquis Nelson added 9, Garland Allen had 8 and Jordan Francois had 7.
New Iberia 52, Houma Christian 35
In the opening game Friday, New Iberia jumped out to a 16-5 lead after one quarter and was not challenged thereafter.
The Yellow Jackets led 29-17 at halftime and 37-23 after three quarters.
Rahmad Paul hit a pair of 3-pointers and had 20 points to lead the Jackets, 11 points coming in the second half. Dillon Mandeville added 19 points, including three 3-pointers in an 11-point first quarter. He also went 4-for-4 at the foul line in the fourth quarter.
Keamon Sims led the Warriors with 13 points, including two 3-point shots. Guy Campbell had 10 points.
Peabody 84, Lafayette 57
Peabody (14-2) pulled away in the second half of what started out looking like a shootout to advance to the semifinals.
The Warhorses led 20-19 after one quarter and 37-32 at halftime, but outscored the Mighty Lions 20-15 in the third quarter and 27-10 in the fourth to win handily.
Dvonte Tennie had 20 points to lead Peabody. Jeff Sibley had 12 of his 16 points in the first half, while Roderick Thomas went 9-for-12 at the free throw line and scored 13 points. Carlton Lowe added 12 points and Jeremy Richard had 9.
Keandre Broussard led Lafayette with 18 points, while Romello Martin had 11 and Corey Davis had 10.
St. Martinville 71, Franklin 30
In the final game Friday night, St. Martinville led 15-8 after one quarter and 32-20 at halftime, then outscored the Hornets 39-10 in the second half to run away with the game.
Jaylen Houston led the Tigers with 11 points. Queilan Green and Lance Potier had 9 each and Bradley Savoy added 8. Twelve players scored for SMSH.
Franklin was paced by Tarence Clark with 7 points and Jamal Johnson and Derrick Kelly with 6 each.
