Halfway through the Southcentral Fishing Association season, the race for the top spot looks as crowded as a jumble of NASCAR cars jockeying for position down the stretch of a big event.

The boat to beat after two of the four tournaments is that carrying Jeff Guillot and Troy Delahoussaye, who lead the pack with 376 points following their victory in the second redfish “slot” tournament April 12.
But it’s a wide open race and anyone’s overall title to win with the events remaining on the schedule May 17 and June 28. Besides the quest to be No. 1, dozens of boats are vying to be in the Top 10 to qualify for the SFA Classic.
The hard-fishing Davis family, which has one overall title to its credit, is one point behind the leader. Milton Davis, Dusty Davis, Brittany Davis and Nick Derouen have amassed 375 points.
They, in turn, have a one-point lead over another set of hard-fishing family members, the Kapps, led by Chris Kapp Jr. Kapp and his son Chris Kapp III are tied for the next place with Brandon Delcambre, Erron Derouen and Trevor Broussard, all at 374 points.
Chris Kapp III, of Lydia, can’t wait for the next two SFA tournaments out of Quintana Canal Boat Landing, Cypremort Point.
“I think we’re in a good spot, better than we expected,” he said, noting the caliber of redfish fishermen in the hunt.

“We’ve got some good fishermen in that club. We had some good luck in this last tournament that moved us up in the rankings. We’re satisfied where we’re at,” he said.
The Kapps finished second with two redfish weighing 14.07 pounds. The Davis boat was third with two redfish weighing 13.68 pounds. (EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to typographical errors, the second- and third-place weights were incorrect in the story published April 20.)
Chris Kapp III also boasted the biggest redfish of the last tournament, a 7.49-pounder. His father caught the other redfish they weighed in.
“We caught both of them early. We had a good day,” the younger Kapp said.
They fished around Southwest Pass, mostly on the bayshore of Marsh Island, he said, and caught the seven redfish between 25 and 26 inches before 10:30 a.m.
“We tried mullets most of the morning but all of them were caught on shrimp,” he said.
Can the Kapps catch Guillot and Delahoussaye, who fished in the last tournament with Cory Neveaux of Erath?
“I don’t know. They’re some good fishermen,” Chris Kapp III said.
After the last tournament, Neveaux indicated he and his crew members might miss one or both of the last two tournaments.
“If he misses them, yeah, we’ll catch them. He can throw one out. But if he misses the next two that’ll put a hurt on them because there are a lot of good fishermen behind us who haven’t had the luck yet. Don’t count them out because they will be there,” he said.
So will the Kapps in Kapp III’s 20-foot Sea Hunt.
“Oh, I’m ready. Yeah, we’re ready. I think we’re going to do pretty good in it myself. As long as Ive got Pop with me telling me where to go, I’ll be all right,” he said.
