Area volleyball teams eye playoffs at midway point of 2017 season

At the halfway point of the prep volleyball season, several Teche Area teams are wrapping up non-district play, prepping for district play and taking stock of where they are in relation to the playoffs, which begin in roughly one month.

In Division I, New Iberia Senior High has struggled through the first half of the season.
The Lady Jackets (0-15) are still looking for their first win of the season headed into Division I, District 2 play Tuesday at home against Lafayette High.
As of Tuesday when the latest, unofficial LHSAA power rankings were released, NISH was 42nd in the rankings, looking to move up with 11 scheduled contests and two tournaments, including their own, remaining in the regular season.
The top 24 teams in each Division qualify for postseason play.
NISH hasn’t been to the volleyball playoffs since going in as the 22nd seed in 2013 and losing in the first round to Destrehan, and hasn’t been out of the first round since losing to eventual state champion St. Joseph’s Academy in the second round in 2008.
In Division II, Westgate (9-8) was 32nd in the power rankings headed into this week’s match with Beau Chene.

The Lady Tigers open District II-2 play against Sam Houston on Oct. 5.
In Division III, St. Martinville (10-9) has been a team of streaks this season. The Lady Tigers opened the year with seven wins in their first nine matches, lost seven straight, and have rebounded with three wins in their last four matches headed into Tuesday’s contest with Opelousas High.
SMSH is currently 17th in the latest power rankings and won’t open District III-4 play until next week on the road at Abbeville.
In Division IV, the Catholic High Lady Panthers, under first-year head coach Gary Westcott, have put together an 8-8 record headed into Tuesday’s match with Teurlings.
CHS is 15th in the latest LHSAA power rankings and would play host to a first-round playoff game if the season ended today.
The top eight teams in each division will get first-round byes, then host the second round game with the winners advancing to the state tournament the first week in November.
Catholic High opens District IV-2 play Thursday at home against Franklin.
The Lady Hornets (4-8) opened the season with a four-match win streak, but have since been on an eight-match losing skid. Franklin is scheduled to play at Morgan City today.
FSH is 25th in the power rankings, on the outside looking in as of Tuesday, but has a chance to make up some ground and get back into the playoffs.
Delcambre (4-10) sits between Catholic High and Franklin at 21st in the power rankings. The Lady Panthers have struggled lately, losing five straight heading into Tuesday’s match with Beau Chene. DHS opens District IV-2 play Thursday at home against Notre Dame, currently third in the power rankings.
West St. Mary (0-10) is still looking for its first win of the season and were scheduled to play at Abbeville Tuesday before opening District IV-2 play Thursday at home against Patterson. The Lady Wolfpack was 40th in the latest power rankings.
In Division V, ESA (10-7) was 15th in the power rankings and opened the week with a three-set sweep of North Vermilion Monday. The Lady Falcons start District V-2 play today at home against Ascension Episcopal, which is third in the power rankings.
Highland Baptist (1-8) lost to Academy of the Sacred Heart-Grand Coteau Monday and plays in the Central Catholic Tournament this weekend.
The Lady Bears are 34th in the power rankings and open District V-2 play at home against Lafayette Christian on Oct. 5 after playing at Westgate Monday and home against Delcambre Tuesday.
