- ESA is currently eighth in the Division V volleyball power rankings and Catholic High is 13th in Division IV as the regular season winds down. Both teams are likely to host first-round matches in the playoffs.
With a little over a week to go in the 2017 high school volleyball season, five Teche Area teams are in solid position to make the postseason.
In Division V, ESA (15-10) currently holds the highest seed of the local volleyball teams at eighth according to the latest, unofficial LHSAA power rankings released Tuesday.
The Lady Falcons have two regular season games remaining, today against Highland Baptist and Tuesday at Lafayette Christian, along with it’s annual Spooktacular Tournament set for Oct. 27 and 28.
As things stand, ESA would get a first round bye in the playoffs before playing host to a second round game with the winner going to the state tournament at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner from Nov. 2-4.
Only the top 24 teams in the power rankings advance to the post season with the top eight seeds getting first round byes.
Also in Division V, Highland Baptist (6-17) was 23rd in the power rankings which effectively puts the Lady Bears on the bubble with three regular season games left — today at ESA, Monday at home against New Iberia Senior High, Tuesday at home against Ascension Episcopal and ESA’s tournament next weekend.
In Division IV, Catholic High (17-13) was 13th in the power rankings, which puts the Lady Panthers in line for a first round playoff game at home.
CHS plays host to Patterson Tuesday then participates in ESA’s tournament next weekend. The Lady Panthers probably won’t move up enough to get a first round bye, but should be safe from falling out of the 9-16 range and having to go on the road for the first round of the playoffs.
Delcambre (10-16) was 17th in the power rankings, one spot away from playing host to a first round playoff game.
The Lady Panthers have two games left in the regular season and a tournament. They play host to Franklin today, go to Franklin Tuesday, then travel to Episcopal High’s tournament in Baton Rouge next weekend.
Franklin (5-24, 30th in the power rankings), besides the two games with Delcambre, also play at Notre Dame Monday. West St. Mary (1-16, 40th in the power rankings) also is scheduled to play at Notre Dame Monday.
Neither team can make up enough points to break into the top 24 and appear to be out of the playoffs this year.
In Division III, St. Martinville (19-13) was 12th in the power rankings with two regular season games left to play, at Opelousas today and home against North Vermilion Tuesday, as well as ESA’s tournament. The Lady Tigers appear to be safe in playing host to first round playoff game but probably won’t make up enough ground to get into the top eight and a first round bye.
In Division II, Westgate (10-19) was 37th in the power rankings with two regular season games, Monday at Northwest and Wednesday at St. Thomas More and this weekend’s tournament at New Iberia Senior High left on the schedule.
The Lady Tigers probably won’t make up enough points to get into the top 24 and into the playoffs this year.
Finally, New Iberia Senior High (2-23) was 40th in the power rankings with four games left and their own tournament this weekend.
The Lady Jackets are scheduled to play at Lafayette High today, at Highland Baptist Monday, then close out at home against Barbe Tuesday and Houma Christian Thursday.
NISH probably won’t make up enough point to get into the top 24 and into the postseason this year.
