Jacob Lanassa of Catholic High School was voted the Defensive Player of the Week for the Teche Area by fans in an online poll.

District 7-2A rivals Loreauville and Catholic High each finished the regular season on a high note with a big district win this past Friday, and the two schools split Player of the Week honors for the final week of the year.

Loreauville High quarterback Zy Alexander and Catholic High nose guard Jacob Lanassa each received the most votes in an online poll at www.iberianet.com/sports, sponsored by the law firm of Haik, Minvielle & Grubbs.

And the two did their work in a half of play each as both squads sent their backups in after halftime of their big wins.

Alexander rushed for 86 yards and two touchdowns and was a perfect 7-for-7 for 122 yards and three touchdowns passing in a 54-13 win over Delcambre. He netted 43.4 percent of the fan vote to win Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Alexander topped four other worthy candidates for the honor, including New Iberia Senior High quarterback Austin Norris, Catholic High quarterback Diallo Landry, Westgate tailback Tyreese Jackson and St. Martinville running back Travien Benjamin.

Landry, who won the honor for Week 9 of the season, had 31.5 percent of the vote after completing five of seven passes for 176 yards and a touchdown in the Panthers’ 70-0 win over Franklin.

Jackson netted 15.5 percent of the vote after rushing for 206 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries in a 38-19 win at Northside.

Norris completed 25 of 35 pass attempts for 244 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for a TD in a 34-27 win over Sam Houston. He drew 8.4 percent of the vote.

Benjamin rushed for 199 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries to lead St. Martinville to a 27-13 win over rival Breaux Bridge and received 1.1 percent of the online fan vote.

Lanassa had seven tackles for the Panthers in a half of play to help spark the shutout win and netted 60.1 percent of the fan vote to win Defensive Player of the Week honors.

He topped three other candidates for the honor, including New Iberia’s Khaj-Erik Olivier, Loreauville’s Calvin Frilot and St. Martinville’s Jayvion Mitchell, each of whom caused turnovers in their teams’ wins.

Frilot had a sack that caused a fumble which he recovered at Delcambre’s 10-yard line to set up a touchdown one play later in Loreauville’s Friday win. He had 26.9 percent of the fan vote.

Olivier had an interception in the final minute of the game to preserve the Yellow Jackets’ District 3-5A win over Sam Houston. He had 7 percent of the fan vote.

Mitchell had an interception that set up a touchdown in St. Martinville’s win.

He drew 6 percent of the fan vote. Each week for the 10 weeks of the regular season, fans and coaches nominate players from Teche Area schools following each week’s games and then vote for their favorites from among those listed in the poll by the sports staff of The Daily Iberian.

Nominations are made beginning each Friday by posting a comment to the story at www.iberianet.com/sports asking for nominations.

Nominations conclude on Monday and voting begins Monday afternoon at www.iberianet.com, ending on Thursday afternoon.

Results are published each Friday in the newspaper and its online site.
