DELCAMBRE — Zy Alexander had a hand in six of seven first-half touchdowns for Loreauville High School, including one on the defensive end, and the visiting Tigers jumped out to a 47-0 lead at intermission in a 54-13 win over Delcambre High School Friday night.

Alexander picked off a pass less than two minutes into the game and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown, then added a touchdown run and at TD pass in the opening period and another TD run and two touchdown passes in the second quarter to help the visiting Tigers build a huge lead before the LHS second team played the entire second half.

Loreauville also held Delcambre to negative yards in the first half before the Panthers got their offense moving in the second half with a pair of long scoring drives.

The win helped Loreauville finish the regular season 3-7 overall and 3-3 in district while sewing up a likely playoff bid. LHS was 28th in the final unofficial Class 2A power rankings from the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, with the top 32 teams getting playoff bids. Playoff pairings will be announced today.

“We’ll find out (who the first-round opponent will be,” LHS coach Rhett Peltier said. “You try to figure this out and it’s not ever a hundred percent accurate, but we’ll know when the pairings come out Sunday and get the tape swapped out and get to work.”

Delcambre finished a tough season 0-10 and 0-6 but coach Marc Broussard said he was proud of his team for continuing to fight throughout the season. the Panthers started the year with 33 players on the roster and finished with 32, losing one to a season-ending knee injury.

Broussard said he’s read teams this year start with 70 players and finish with 30 after they began to struggle.

“That’s not us,” he said, noting everyone on the roster at the beginning of the year was there at the end of the season. “I’m proud of the kids.”

Loreauville scored on all six of its offensive possessions in the first half, and all were quick. The drives went four plays, four plays, three plays, one play, two plays and two plays.

“I was proud of the kids,” Peltier said. “They came out and executed the way we practiced and expected them to do.”

Alexander finished the night with 86 yards and two touchdowns on four rushes and 122 yards and three TDs on 7-for-7 passing.

Though Alexander had a hand in six of seven first-half scores, it was by no means a one-man show for the Tigers, who also got big nights from tailback Leslie Joseph (3-90, 1 TD rushing), Brennan Williams (3-84, 2 TDs receiving, 1-9 rushing), Shajuan Nora (4-38, 1 TD receiving) and freshman Chris Anthony (4-89, 1 TD rushing).

“We’re a work in progress,” Peltier said. “We have a lot of kids playing in their first year and we’re trying to get better every week. We’re trying to limit mistakes as much as possible each game.”

LHS led 27-0 after one quarter and scored three times in the second. The Tigers also held Delcambre to minus-30 yards rushing and 23 yards passing in the first quarter for a net minus-7 yards.

That included a 19-yard sack by Calvin Frilot on the first play of the second quarter, with Frilot forcing and then recovering a fumble at the 10 to set up a 10-yard TD pass from Alexander to Nora on the next play.

The Tigers held Delcambre to negative yards on 14 of 25 rushing plays in the half.

Delcambre got moving on its last drive of the half, converting three first downs before time ran out, and carried that momentum into the second half, which saw a running clock.

The Panthers scored on their first possession of the third quarter, moving 80 yards in five plays with runs of 11, 14 and 19 by Noah Broussard, the last one for a touchdown, and 29 yards by Ian Evans. The PAT by Shadd Derise made it a 47-7 game.

Anthony answered with a 53-yard touchdown run on Loreauville’s next play to push the lead to 54-7 following the point-after by Landon Lagrange.

Peltier said the scout team, which played a six-game junior varsity schedule, works hard and he wanted to get them some playing time so they got in for the second half.

“They bust their butts on the scout team every day in practice,” he said.

Broussard then powered a fourth-quarter scoring drive of 71 yards with nine rushes for 43 yards, including a one-yard TD run, to make the final 54-13. Hayden Frederick also ripped off a 25-yard run and Evans had a seven-yard carry in the series.

“That’s been our kids,” Marc Broussard said. “They fight and they fight and they fight and they never give up. I’m proud of them.”

Noah Broussard led Delcambre with 91 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. Dooley completed four of five passes and Evans had 36 yards on two runs.

“I’m proud of our kids,” Marc Broussard said. “These kids have practiced hard all year, they’ve fought hard all year, they’ve played hard every Friday night.”
