A motion to reconsider the outcome of a vote made on Feb. 26 regarding the appointment of former Parish President David Hanagriff to the West St. Mary Port Commission will be taken up at Wednesday’s St. Mary Parish Council meeting.

Councilman Rodney Olander is introducing a motion to amend the minutes of that meeting to say that Hanagriff was in fact appointed to the port commission.

The council had sharp disagreement over Hanagriff’s appointment to the commission due to the parish charter allegedly stipulating that a former parish president cannot serve on another board for an allotted amount of time. Hanagriff previously served as parish president until current President Sam Jones was sworn in January.

Olander’s motion contends that the ordinance states that appointments to a board, commission or advisory committee shall be by a majority of the council members present. As a result, the statements made at the meeting that the 5-3 vote in favor of Hanagriff failed was incorrect. If the argument holds up, Hanagriff is now an appointed member of the port commission.

Council members took issue with Hanagriff’s appointments because of the charter stipulation. Some council members said they also had a problem with Hanagriff because of his alleged attempt to file charges when the council was seeking financial information from a drainage district the council oversees.

In other business, the council will vote to authorize the parish to enter into a lease agreement with the St. Mary Communications District for the lease of property at 1200 David Dr. in Morgan City.

The council will also hear from Director of Economic Development Evan Boudreaux who will discuss changes to the industrial tax exemption.

The meeting takes place 6 p.m Wednesday at the St. Mary Parish Courthouse.
