IPAL brings ‘Beauty’

Friday marks the opening night for the Iberia Performing Arts League summer youth musical “Beauty and the Beast Jr.,” and director Vincent Barras said the 50-member cast has been rehearsing nonstop.
“They’ve taken to it beautifully,” said Barras, speaking in reference to the several first-timers.
However, Barras said there are also a number of veterans, like the two seasoned actresses sharing the role of Belle.
“Belle has always been a dream role,” said Katelyn Stelly, 18, a recent New Iberia Senior High graduate.
Stelly’s counterpart, Northwestern State University theater student Natalie Sabille, said she has always loved the show and decided to audition when she saw the notice on IPAL’s website.
Although the New Iberia stage is familiar stomping ground for Stelly, who’s been in three productions there, Sabille has spent most of her performing days at the Opelousas Little Theater near her hometown of Sunset.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect,” said Sabille. “I can’t think of anyone better to share the role with. It’s been great.”
Barras noted the cast has bonded during the frequent and lengthy rehearsals. Stelly agreed and said the chemistry between the cast and Barras has been great.
Both Sabille and Stelly said they’re looking forward to the same thing on Friday night — the audience’s expressions, especially the children’s.
“I do this because I love to make people happy, to see them smile,” said Sabille.
“It’s so fulfilling after all our months of work to see the looks on their faces,” said Stelly.
The actresses also said the play will have something for everyone.
“It’s such a warm and well-rounded play,” said Stelly.
Looking at the production from the director’s seat, Barras said in addition to being a solid production, the costumes are adorable and the set turned out better than he’d imagined.
“I’m stunned with what (Matthew Dugan) came up with,” said Barras about the set design.
“Beauty and the Beast Jr.” falls outside the regular IPAL season, meaning season ticket holders will have to buy regular tickets along with other theater-goers.
Tickets are $10 and are available at Accentrics, Delaune’s Pharmacy and Paul’s Flower and Plant Shop or by calling 364-6114.
The play will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with a 3 p.m. performance on Sunday at the Essanee Theater on Iberia Street in downtown New Iberia.
