The end of this year’s regular legislative session in Baton Rouge not only signaled the end of Gov. Jeff Landry’s first session in office, but also the beginning of a new legislative team of elected officials representing Iberia Parish.

State Sen. Blake Miguez and State Rep. Beau Beaullieu, both at the forefront of representing Iberia Parish in Baton Rouge, seemed to come away with a lot of wins for infrastructure in Iberia Parish.

Speaking to the New Iberia Kiwanis Club Thursday afternoon, the two representatives gave an overview of the past few months of legislative politics and some of the wins for Iberia Parish that passed through the House, Senate and governor’s desk.

One of the highlights, according to Beaullieu and Miguez, was road development and infrastructure.

“If you live in Senate District 22 in the next two years, you better get a good detailer because there’s going to be more asphalt from road work,” Miguez said. “We sent more money to DOTD for roads in Iberia and St. Martin parishes than they’re going to be able to keep up with.”

Those projects include the work being done on U.S. 90, which will continue from its current phase from Jefferson Island Road to Louisiana 14, it will continue to Louisiana 15 to Louisiana 88 thanks to funding from this year’s session.

“When you look on a per capita basis, Iberia Parish is doing really with the state resources we’re bringing to the area,” Beaullieu said. “Just the Highway 90 project is a really big project.”

Roads weren’t the only legislative wins. Some of the others Beaullieu mentioned included additional funding to finish the work at the Louisiana PepperPlex, funding a new and improved Acadiana Crime Lab in New Iberia, an additional $5 million for the Acadiana Gulf of Mexico Access Channel (AGMAC) Project and even some funding for road repairs to Main Street in Loreauville.

Apart from local wins, both elected officials are getting new responsibilities in the Legislature as well. Miguez in his first year in the State Senate and said he was very happy with his committee assignments, which included the Senate Finance Committee, House and Governmental Affairs and Education. While he serves as vice-chairman on House and Governmental Affairs, Beaullieu serves as Chairman in the House for that committee.

“The boys from New Iberia are really running the election code in the state,” Miguez joked.

Meanwhile, Beaullieu is at the forefront of possible updates to the Louisiana constitution, which failed in this year’s session but is not altogether dead. Beaullieu said making changes to the Louisiana constitution on several fronts remains important to deal with several budgetary issues in the state.
