New Iberia police also arrested Kyjuan Washington, an 18-year-old New Iberia resident, on charges of child desertion and an active bench warrant for violation of registration and no insurance.

The child desertion charges stem from a report of a child who was wondering City Park alone. The report was made around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

New Iberia police said it took about six hours to locate the child’s mother.

“James admitted that she and Kyjuan Washington dropped her daughter off at the park and left. James also admitted that the two of them were smoking synthetic marijuana earlier that morning prior to dropping her three-year-old child off at the park,” New Iberia police said in a news release.

James has two children. Police said both are in the care of the state.
