On April 30, 1953, Herman married Ella Wagner Dixon and they celebrated 65 years of marriage. Herman teased Ella while they were in grade school by pinning her braids to the desk behind her and knew he was going to marry her; going as far as asking his mother to prepare the wedding details after his brief return in April 1953 from serving during the Korean War.
