Westgate football players piling up scholarship offers

As the summer heats up, so are the recruiting trails to New Iberia as several Westgate High School football players are garnering attention from college coaches.

Receiver Kayshon Boutte received scholarship offers from LSU and Mississippi State over the past few days after earlier getting offers from Arkansas, Arizona State, Tennessee, West Virginia and Louisiana Tech.

Running back Tyreese Jackson has offers from Houston, Kansas, UL Lafayette, Memphis, Virginia, Southern Miss, West Virginia, Tulane, McNeese and South Alabama.

Linebacker/defensive end Ron Madison has offers from Southern University, McNeese, Southeastern Louisiana, Northwestern State and Southeast Missouri.

Receiver Javon Marks and linebacker Scotty Comeaux both received offers from Jackson State recently.

Makholven Sonn, also a wide out, has offers from Arkansas, Kansas and West Virginia.

Defensive back Mar’keyvrick Eddie has an offer from Western Kentucky.

Westgate head football coach Ryan Antoine said the offers are a result of the players’ hard work, attending summer football camps and the work being put in by WHS coaches to get information out to college coaches they know.

Boutte was at LSU’s Elite Camp this weekend, and he and Sonn were at a camp at the University of Arkansas the previous weekend.

“The main thing is they’re working their tails off and doing a little bit extra on their own,” Antoine said. “The biggest thing for these guys is to keep working and stay humble. All these guys are eligible; they have their grades.”

Many of the WHS coaches played college football, Antoine said, and do a good job talking with former teammates who are currently coaching in college. One of the big goals for the coaching staff is to help players get out of New Iberia with a college opportunity, he said.
