Dural breaks arm at practice

METAIRIE — Former LSU wide receiver and Breaux Bridge native Travin Dural reportedly suffered a broken arm during a training-camp practice with the New Orleans Saints on Sunday morning.

Dural was injured while blocking on a running play at the start of the team period and fell to the ground in pain.

Medical personnel examined him for a few minutes before helping him to his feet and escorting him to the locker room as he protected his left arm.

The Advocate reported that Dural’s injury was a broken humerus and that he will undergo surgery. He will be sidelined indefinitely and his season could be in jeopardy.

Dural had made significant progress from last season when he spent his rookie year on the Saints practice roster after being signed as an undrafted free agent.

On Saturday, wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson praised Dural for having lost weight and gotten in better condition.

“I think Travin is a talent,” Johnson said. “He’s a smart guy. He knows the plays, he knows the offense. Now all of a sudden he knows what to do, he’s in better shape, he’s eating better.

“He’s playing really, really well for us.

“I thought when we came out of the spring he was probably the most pleasant surprise that we had, coming from where he was, out of shape and little bit banged up to where he is now. I think it’s an amazing tribute to that kid.”

Despite the improvement, Dural faced an uphill battle to make the active roster. Michael Thomas and Ted Ginn Jr. are set as the starting wide receivers. Cameron Meredith, signed as a veteran free agent, appears to be the third receiver and third-round draft choice Tre’Quan Smith has had an outstanding start to training camp and figures to make the team.

Tommylee Lewis, who doubles as a return specialist, and Brandon Coleman, who is on the physically Unable to Perform List but is one of the better blocking receivers on the team, are incumbents and strong candidates to make the team again.
