Franklin 34, Kinder 28
FRANKLIN — Things were looking bad for the Hornets with 9-1/2 minutes left in the fourth quarter when Kinder surged ahead 28-14 on a three-yard touchdown run by running back Ty Fuselier.
But the Hornets (6-5) responded with a 16-play scoring drive, overcoming a pair of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and a personal foul, to close to within 28-20 on a 36-yard scoring run by Travis Zeno on a quarterback keeper.
The Yellow Jackets (7-5) recovered an attempted onside kick at midfield and quickly drove into the red zone, but QB Hayes Fawcett coughed the ball up o n a first-down run and Franklin’s Malik King scooped up the loose pigskin and races up the home sideline 80 yards for a touchdown. Franklin QB Zariq Perry kept for the 2-point conversion to tie the game at 28-all with 2:05 remaining.
Then came a crucial series of events. Franklin kicked the ball out of bounds, giving Kinder the option to take the ball at its 35 with 2:05 to go, or force another kickoff.
The Yellow Jackets opted for the kick, and couldn’t handle Zylan Perry’s pooch kick. King opportunistictly covered the muff at the Kinder 31, setting up Franklin’s go-ahead drive. A 17-yard carry by Perry to the 2-yard line set up a one-yard run up the middle by Jarius Boyd, who finished the night with a game-high 135 rushing yards, followed by a quarterback sneak that Perry got into the end zone on for a 34-28 lead with 27.9 seconds to go.
Kinder mustered one first down on its ensuing possession but time ran out when Royal Jackson sacked Fawcett on the game’s final play.
Franklin had not hosted a playoff game since the mid-1990s and prior to upsetting 10th-seeded Red River the week before hadn’t won a playoff game since 1995.
Amite is 13-1 after a 41-6 win over No. 15 seed East Feliciana.

St. Martinville (12-0) will now host Leesville (12-0) on Friday.
Bastrop 40, Westgate 14
Quaterius Hawkins tossed five touchdown passes as Bastrop broke open a tight game with 22 unanswered points in the second half to defeat Westgate.
Westgate scored twice on special teams miscues by the ninth-seeded Rams (9-2).
Keith Lopez staked the No. 25-seeded Tigers (7-5) to a 7-0 lead when he caught a shanked punt in the end zone in the first quarter.
After Bastrop went ahead 18-7 at the half, WHS closed within 18-14 when Ronald Bernard scooped up another short punt and took it to the house.
