Tigers finish tied for third, Cajuns tie for 10th at Mossy Oak Collegiate
WEST POINT, Mississippi — The LSU men’s golf team shot a 4-under 284 third round to finish the Mossy Oak Collegiate, held at the Mossy Oak Golf Club, tied for 3rd place at 10-under 854 (289-281-284) for the tournament.
Peter Hinnant recorded a bogey-free, 4-under-par 68 to earn a fourth-place overall finish and the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns finished in a tie for 10th at Mississippi State’s annual tournament.
The Tigers opened the day by finishing the final few holes of their second rounds that was halted Monday evening due to darkness. Nicholas Arcement completed a 5-under 67 round that saw him grab a season-high seven birdies in one round. Cohen Trolio carded a 2-under 70 round while Drew Doyle and Michael Sanders both finished at even par 72 to round out LSU’s second round score to a 7-under 281. Garrett Barber had the drop score as he finished at 1-over 73.
Arcement put in a steady 1-under 71 performance in the final round to take his final score to 3-under 213 and a finish of tied for 9th place on the individual leaderboard, his 3rd top ten finish of the season. Sanders and Trolio finished only one stroke behind at 2-under 214 and tied for 12th place as they shot a 3-under 69 and 2-under 70 in the final round, respectively. Doyle’s 2-over 74 was the final score counted towards the team’s 4-under 284 as he finished the tournament tied for 41st place at 3-over 219 while Barber carded a 4-over 76 final round to finish at 2-over 218 and tied in 37th place.
No. 3-ranked Vanderbilt claimed the team title with a 25-under 839 (280-280-279) performance while the Commodores’ own Gordon Sargent claimed medalist honors with a 12-under 204.
LSU is scheduled to start the first round of the SEC Championships on Wednesday, April 20, at the Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
Louisiana, making its final tuneup event before the Sun Belt Conference Championships in two weeks, posted a team score of even-par 288 in the final 18 holes to finish tied with Louisiana Tech in the 19-team field.
Ragin’ Cajuns
Hinnant (70-72-68-210), who earned his ninth career top-10 finish, tied his best career finish set in the fall at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invite. The senior finished in a three-way tie for fourth which included Auburn’s J.W. Butler, ranked No. 43 nationally, and recorded 10 birdies in the tournament to become the second Ragin’ Cajuns golfer to surpass the 400-mark in a career.
The senior notched his eighth round in the 60’s this season after posting a 2-under-34 on the back nine before recording an identical 2-under 34 on the front.
Charlie Flynn (71-73-73-217) finished tied for 31st for Louisiana with Jake Marler (79-73-75-227) finishing tied for 78th. Eli Ortego was one stroke back (76-72-80-228) while Matt Weber finished in a tie for 84th (78-79-72-229).
No. 3-ranked Vanderbilt claimed the team title at 839 followed by No. 16 Auburn at 851. No. 24 LSU (854), host Mississippi State (854) and No. 67 Kansas State (861) rounded out the top five in a field which featured five programs in the GolfStat Top 50 — Vanderbilt, Auburn, Florida State (17), Ole Miss (19), LSU and UAB (47) – and 14 in the GolfStat Top 100.
Vandy’s Gordon Sargent, ranked No. 18 nationally, claimed medalist honors after finishing at 12-unde 204 for the tournament. Hunter Logan of Mississippi State was three shots back at 207 with Vanderbilt’s Reid Davenport in third at 208.
Louisiana will compete in the Sun Belt Conference Championships which will be held April 24-27 at Mystic Creek Golf Club in El Dorado, Ark.
