Hundreds of cyclists head to New Iberia as part of Cycle Zydeco

If you drove in Iberia Parish Saturday, chances are you had to pass a cyclist or two.

Hundreds of cycling enthusiasts passed through town as part of an annual event that brings locals and tourists to Acadiana to enjoy the scenery and local culture.

Cycle Zydeco started off in Lafayette this year, where those participating got a chance to enjoy Festival International de Louisiane Friday, and promptly made their way to Breaux Bridge and then New Iberia.

The event is branded as a “festival on wheels,” and cycling aficionados get a chance to travel miles down Louisiana roads and make stops and festive locations that are full of food, music and lots of fun.

Monique Anderson, a Colorado resident, said this was her first year attending the event, and she enjoyed the experience.

“It’s been a lot of fun. I’ve been to Louisiana before but I’ve never seen some of the parts where we’ve been,” Anderson said.

At the same time as cyclists rode into New Iberia, El Festival Español de Nueva Iberia was taking place downtown, and Cycle Zydeco riders had plenty of opportunity to try a paella and relax while listening to the lineup of musicians that played throughout the day.

The participating cyclists camped at New Iberia City Park for the night, planning to make their way back to Lafayette to the Blackham Coliseum today.
