2 NISH students die in wreck

Students and faculty at New Iberia Senior High School are mourning the loss of two students who died Thursday morning in a car crash just blocks away from school, according to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Seventeen-year-old Hunter Segura and 15-year-old Ethan Neisser, both of New Iberia, died in the incident.

IPSO deputies responded to the two-vehicle crash on Jefferson Terrace Boulevard south of Admiral Doyle shortly after 7 a.m.

“Deputies found two people trapped in a grey Honda four-door passenger car and another driver, and an infant trapped in a white Nissan SUV. The SUV driver and infant were airlifted to a Lafayette hospital,” said Maj. Wendell Raborn, spokesman for the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office.

NISH Principal Curt Landry said Neisser and Segura were a freshman and sophomore, respectively.

Landry said Thursday a difficult day for his campus and counselors have been made available to those grieving.

“As soon as we heard of this we notified our parishwide crisis team. We currently have four NISH counselors on staff and we brought in four or five more,” Landry said.

The NISH principal said counselors also will be made available on Friday because some students will be hearing of the news for the first time due to low attendance Thursday that was the result of a separate incident concerning a school threat.

“Our hearts are just broken for these students and their families. It’s just an unspeakable tragedy,” Iberia Parish Schools Superintendent Dale Henderson said.

Raborn said the crash is under investigation.
