Early morning FBI raids

Federal law enforcement officers served grand jury subpoenas on two New Iberia businesses Tuesday morning.

At least two businesses — Iberia Chiropractic Clinic in the 2200 block of Center Street and the law office of La’derical Wagner in the 100 block of French Street — were served with subpoenas seeking records of more than 30 patients, although representatives of the two businesses said only three patient files were found to be pertinent to the subpoena.

In addition, agents also sought business records and tax filings from ICC and its owner, Dr. Adel Malahmeh, going back to 2013. Agents also sought a list of all patients treated at ICC either referred by or in conjunction with Wagner’s office, any compensation of fee agreements between ICC and Wagner’s firm or any other law corporations, as well as any agreements between ICC and any automobile insurance companies.

The subpoena also sought any records of complaints regarding service or treatment at ICC.

The raids occurred at approximately 8:40 a.m. Tuesday. Surveillance camera footage from a nearby office shows several unmarked vehicles, along with Louisiana State Police units, blocking French Street between Main Street and St. Peter Street in front of Wagner’s office. Photos also show what appears to be several Federal Bureau of Investigation agents conferring in the parking lot outside the law office.

Wagner said she was able to provide some of the records being sought.

“I only had files on three patients,” she said Tuesday afternoon.

Malahmeh said records surrendered from his office also applied to three patients under his care who were on the list. He did not say if any other records were turned over.

“I generally only keep records for six years, so some of them are no longer here,” he said.

It is not known if any other businesses were served Tuesday.

On Wednesday, FBI New Orleans Special Agent in Charge Eric Rommal released a statement.

“In accordance with Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Justice policy we do not discuss details of ongoing investigations,” Rommal wrote.  “However, on Tuesday, Feb. 26, the FBI New Orleans Division did conduct a search which was authorized by a federal court. The search was executed in accordance with applicable FBI policy.  Additionally, as in all cases, the safety of all those involved is paramount.”
