Arrest made in connection to skeletal remains found UPDATE

An arrest was made in connection with the skeletal remains found near Cherokee Street in New Iberia, according to the New Iberia Police Department.

Iberia Parish Jail records show that Dwayne Alfred was arrested and booked at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday. Alfred was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping, among other charges.

Chief Todd D’Albor confirmed Tuesday that an arrest was made in connection to the skeletal remains.

The investigation of the remains is ongoing, NIPD said in a prepared statement on Tuesday, and further comments will be made at a later date.

Investigators were at the scene of a brushed vegetated area directly across from the intersection of Cherokee Street and Wysteria Street on Sunday following the discovery of skeletal remains.

The remains are believed to be related to the disappearance of New Iberia resident Deja Cummings, who was reported missing on Oct. 18 of last year.

The NIPD is working with the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab in order to identify the remains, and more information will be reported as it becomes available.
