Garden tours, historic homes and now a tour of Mid-Century modern homes in the Teche Area will feature unique architectural designs that make each home a showplace.
The Louisiana Architecture Foundation will partner with the Iberia Cultural Resources Association and the Iberia Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau to showcase a great selection of modern-styled homes in New Iberia. The tour will highlight the mid-1950s to late 60s in exterior architecture design. The self-guided tour takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 1 at seven sites, six open homes and as lagniappe, a modern-styled church. This tour serves as a fund raiser to support both the Louisiana Architecture Foundation and Iberia Cultural Resources Association.
“We think the ‘Modern Tour Of Homes’ in New Iberia will showcase unique hidden gems of both architecture and interiors,” says ICRA president Cathy Indest. “In addition, if the individual enjoys great food, the VIP Reception featuring ‘Lagniappe Too’ delicacies should not be missed!”
The cost of the tour is $35 but to buy a $55 dollar ticket, patrons will be treated to a VIP Reception after the tour featuring the foods formerly enjoyed by residents at Lagniappe Too. VIP ticket holders will be served wine and champagne at one of the unique homes from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Members of Iberia Cultural Resources or The Louisiana Architecture Foundation will receive a small discount on ticket purchases, and should mention the ongoing support to the organizations.
Field Landry, son of former Lagniappe Too owners Al and Elaine Landry, will prepare the delicacies expected to be a reflection of the food and fellowship enjoyed by residents during the popular restaurant’s years of operation. The original recipes are just one part of the Landry connection. Architect Al Landry also will be part of the panel Friday night of architects and speakers discussing the era of homes featured on the tour.
“As we did with the Hayes Town tour, we’ll be highlighting smaller towns in Louisiana where architects and fans of the art form will be coming from across the state as well as neighboring states,” said Stacey Pfingsten, executive director of LAF. “This is not just educational, it is a great time to appreciate a light, playful and organically local architecture. We’ve featured homes already in Lafayette, Baton Rouge and New Orleans. We’re looking forward to this one in New Iberia.”
Friday night May 31 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. a panel discussion will be held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. The topic of New Iberia modernism will feature Perry Segura, Al Landry and mid-century modern aficionado Joel Breaux and will be moderated by Maureen Foster of Designing Women of Acadiana. The panel discussion is free and open to the public followed by light refreshments.
Tickets for the June 1 tour can be bought on Eventbrite ($30 online/$25 for members of LAF or ICRA) by searching new-iberia-modern-house-tour. If buying in person, tickets can be purchased at the Bayou Teche Museum during normal museum hours starting May 23. Day of tour tickets are $35/$30 for members. VIP tickets are $55/$50 for members. The museum will also serve as ticket headquarters for Check-In for attendees and to purchase “day of” tickets.
