Iberia animal shelter seeks people to adopt animals
The Iberia Parish Animal Control Shelter is seeking people to adopt animals so the shelter can continue to operate without having to euthanize any of the animals in its care.
In a Facebook post this past week, manager Sonia Tauzin said the shelter was expecting to have to take in several animals from the seizures of neglected or abandoned dogs, which requires the shelter to hold them for a minimum of 15 days.
“As with most shelters, it’s a daily struggle,” Tauzin said. “We are always full. However, sometimes when we say full, we mean if another dog comes in someone will lose their life, oftentimes more than one dog.”
The shelter is open for adoptions Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Adoptions are free, but state law requires that all adopted animals be spayed or neutered. Each animal that goes through the shelter is also vaccinated and microchipped.
There is an $80 fee for dogs and a $50 fee for cats to cover the services, payable by money order. Adoptees are given an appointment to return the adopted animal to the shelter for spay or neuter surgery.
Available animals can be found at www.petango.com/ipac.
The shelter also has feral/community outdoor only cats available free of charge. They are all vaccinated and spayed/neutered. These cats make great barn/outdoor cats and work well as pest control, shelter officials said.
The Iberia Parish Animal Control Shelter is located at 2017 Seaway Access Road between the Acadiana Regional Airport and U.S. Highway 90, near the Iberia Parish Correctional Facility.
Those with any questions about adopting a pet from the shelter may call 364-6311 between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
