Early voting indicates light turnout at polls

If the early voting for next week’s municipal elections in Iberia and St. Mary parishes is any indication, turnout will be light next weekend.

In Iberia Parish, the town of Jeanerette is host to the only elections scheduled. Mayor Aprill Foulcard is vying for re-election against two opponents, Carol “Bro” Bourgeois Jr. and Aquicline Rener Arnold. All three candidates are Democrats.

All but one member of Jeanerette’s Board of Aldermen won their seats without opposition. In Ward 4, Republican incumbent Kenneth Kern will be facing Louis Lancon, no party, for the seat.

On Saturday, 10 votes were cast at the Iberia Parish Courthouse. For the week, 25 mail-in votes were received and 98 in-person ballots cast, for a total of 123.

St. Mary Parish has no political offices on the March 30 ballot, but voters there will be deciding on a tax renewal for Franklin Foundation Hospital. The 10-mill renewal will last for 10 years.

At the Franklin Courthouse, 30 ballots were cast in person Saturday and one mail-in vote was received. For the week, 167 mail-in ballots and 219 in-person ballots were cast, for a total of 386.

Polls will open again Saturday morning at 7 a.m. and remain open until 9 p.m.
