A fire in an apartment on Grand Prix Boulevard in Iberia Parish claimed the life of a 7-year-old girl Tuesday morning.

According to Iberia Parish Fire District 1 Chief Guy Bonin, the department received the call about the fire at about 1:20 a.m. The mother was able to escape the blaze, but the child was not able to be saved.

The fire was limited to the single apartment.

Deputies with the Louisiana State Office of the Fire Marshal are investigating the fire.

Bonin said 16 firefighters responded to the conflagration, including members of Iberia Fire District No. 1, B.O.M. Volunteer Fire Department and Rynella Volunteer Fire Department
