Community Health Initiative a success
The National Community Health Initiative 5K Run/Walk was held on May 11 in New Iberia, with organizers calling the walk an overall success.
The event was put on to benefit the community through donations to research diabetes, cancer, HIV/AIDS and Alzheimer’s Disease, according to organizer Deidre Ledbetter.
The annual event is put on by Ghadur Court #129, Daughters, Ghadur Temple #161, Shriners and the City of New Iberia.
The walk and run started at Bank Avenue Park and ended back at the park as well.
Winners for the day were Emily Begnaud, Tanna Burleigh, Avery Geoffroy and DeAndre Grooms taking first place; Ridge Boudreaux and Deedy Johnson Reid, second place and Alex Loston, third place in their respective age groups. The Health Fair followed from 9 to 11 a.m. with Iberia Medical Center, Iberia Comprehensive Community Health Center, Acadian Ambulance and LA Department of Health providing information, giveaways, healthy snacks and services to attendees.
