New Iberia Police Department narcotics agents arrested a man on drug charges Friday.

According to a prepared statement, agents began conducting an investigation of illegal narcotics activity in the 1000 block of Mississippi Street.

Agents made contact with the suspect, who fled. After a short foot chase, the suspect, Jakari Makel Gregoire, 24, was caught. Gregoire was found in possession of 31 suspect MDMA Ecstasy pills and a firearm, according to the statement.

Gregoire was booked into the Iberia Parish Jail on the charges of resisting an officer, possession with intent to distribute a Schedule I Controlled Dangerous Substance, illegal carrying of weapons, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm in the presence of a CDS.

During the investigation, agents also recovered suspected marijuana and a second firearm. The recovery of those items is under active investigation.
