Police arrest New Iberia man on attempted murder charge

A New Iberia man was arrested and charged with attempted murder after an afternoon shooting Wednesday.

Jakaria Gregoire, 27, of Wallace Street was charged with attempted second-degree murder, illegal carrying of a weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, firearm-free zone violation, illegal weapon obstruction of justice and aggravated criminal damage to property.

New Iberia Police said an officer assigned to the Directed Patrol Unit was on patrol in the 900 block of Mississippi Street when the officer heard several gunshots about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

An investigation revealed Gregoire, who has a history of drug-related arrests and convictions, fired shots and hit another man. A bystander took the victim to Iberia Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.
