L.J. Doré
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted for L.J. “Nookie” Doré at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, located at 1303 St. Jude Ave. Fr. Bill Melancon will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at David’s Funeral Home, located at 1101 Trotter St., on Tuesday, beginning at 8 a.m. The CDA Court of Blessed Mother Teresa will pray a rosary at the funeral home at 8:30 a.m.
Born in New Iberia on August 30, 1923, “Nookie”, was the son of Gaston and Agnes Migues Doré. He enlisted in the U. S. Army during World War II and served in the South Pacific. On March 31, 1946, he married his true love, Gernice Meyers. For more than 70 years, Mr. Doré was a member of the Brotherhood of Carpenters Union. He worked in the commercial construction industry, often as a job supervisor. Mr. L.J. died at his home in New Iberia on Sunday, March 11, 2018, at the age of 94.
When his sons were in the Boy Scouts, Mr. Doré was actively involved with Troop 133. He frequently served as an Iberia Parish election commissioner in Precinct 5. He also served two terms on the Iberia Parish Sewerage District No. 1 Commission. He was a faithful member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church for many years.
Mr. L.J. enjoyed making things. He particularly liked to make yard decorations and blackberry wine. He also enjoyed baking bread, biscuits, and carrot cakes for his family and friends.
Mr. Doré is survived by his loving wife of nearly 72 years, Gernice Meyers Doré. He is also survived by his three sons and two daughters-in-law: Daniel Doré and his wife, Linda, of St. Francisville; Donn Doré and his wife, Mary, of Lo De Marcos, Nayarit, Mexico; and David Doré of New Iberia.
Mr. Doré had three grandchildren: Tina Doré Cantrell of Brentwood, Tennessee; Blake Doré of Portland, Oregon; and Emily Doré of New York, ew York. He also had five great-grandchildren: Michael Chandler, Jessica Lynn Chandler, Kathryn Cantrell, Harvey Doré, and Julian Doré.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Doré was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Daniel Alexander Cantrell.
The family would like to thank the many people who provided Mr. Doré with excellent health care throughout the years. They would also like to thank all those who have kept Mr. L.J. and his family in their prayers.
