SULPHUR — For three Catholic High Lady Panthers, this school year has produced an athletic memory to last a lifetime.
Senior Marie Hoag, and junior twin sisters Taylor and Sydney Lahasky were members of three major programs that went to state championships.
All three were on the court when CHS won the state volleyball championship in November; on the field when Catholic High lost the state soccer championship to Academy of the Sacred Heart in February, then came back and helped the Lady Panthers claim their second title with a state softball championship Saturday. CHS also won the state gymnastics championship on Saturday.
That’s two gold trophies and one silver trophy for the three girls in three sports in a school year.
“I think that it was bound to happen,” said Hoag, who served the game-winning point in the volleyball match and had three hits and an RBI in Saturday’s softball final. “In every sport we put in the hours and worked hard and we put it all together.
“It was this year or not at all and we did it. We worked for it, we deserved it.”
The Lahasky twins almost served as bookends for the scholastic athletic year. Taylor won the Most Outstanding Player award at the state volleyball championship and Sydney won the Most Oustanding Player award in Saturday’s softball final.
“It’s unbelieveable,” said Sydney Lahasky. “It exceeded my expectations. I didn’t think that we were going to get this far. I’m just so happy that I was part of the team.”
Lahasky said that there is not just one of the three experiences that stand out.
“We worked so hard in every sport,” she said. “I love them all. I wish we would have won in soccer but two rings is pretty good.”
For twin sister Taylor Lahasky, it was an incredible run in every sport that she hopes can be repeated next year.
“I know that state titles don’t happen twice (very often),” said Taylor Lahasky. “I’m hoping for the same thing next year.”
What’s amazing is that in the previous year, the trio had participated in all three tournaments, falling just short of the title game in volleyball and softball and losing to ASH in the soccer finals.
That the three had even more success one year later is staggering.
“Nothing changed. I’m a competitive player and all I want to do is win,” said Taylor Lahasky. “There is no comparison for the two, both feel pretty great.”
Hoag, who wanted to go out with the titles that she missed out on in her junior year, finished her senior season with two state championships, but is not sure which is the more satisfying of the two.
“That’s tough,” said Hoag.
“I don’t know. They both feel just as great. We came from behind in both to win the title but if I had to chose, it would probably be softball since we’ve been playing it for so long. I’ve been starting varsity since eighth grade. But both are awesome.”
