Italian Fig Bars

2 cups sugar

4 cups flour (add more if needed to form dough)

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

1 1/2 cups Crisco

2 eggs

2 teaspoons baking powder

Sift flour and baking powder in a bowl. Add sugar, eggs, crisco and vanilla. Mix well together. Gradually add sifted baking powder and flour. Before rolling out dough, flour surface to prevent sticking. Form dough into a roll and roll out to 1/4 inch thick. Put filling down the center.

Fold the dough from both sides to cover the filling. Turn roll over and cut on a slant into approximately 1 1/2 pieces. Put a slit in the top of each bar. Spray cookie sheet with Pam. Place bars on the pan and bake for 10 to 15 minutes in a 350 degree oven.

Fig Bar Filling

2 cups smashed fig preserves

2 cups ground pecans

Mix together, adding ground pecans to thicken the mixture.
