A street that leads down to the canal in Delcambre is covered in fairly deep water on Monday afternoon. Some roads were impassable without a truck.

DELCAMBRE — High water covered the shoulders and median of Louisiana 14 heading west out of New Iberia Monday afternoon. In Delcambre, several streets around town were flooded. Some roads close to the canal were impassable without a truck.

Several community leaders said there have been no injuries or major property damage so far, just a lot of water.

“I am not aware of any major damage,” said former Delcambre Mayor Carol Broussard, “just a lot of rain and some flooding.”

“We put some barricades up, just to have people slow down so they aren’t making waves,” said Town Superintendent Homer Stelly, “but it’s been pretty quiet so far.”

The Delcambre canal was noticeably high around 3 p.m. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development released a statement earlier in the day saying that the canal, near Lousiana 14 at the Delcambre Bridge, was closed to marine traffic.

“Due to inclement weather conditions throu-ghout Louisiana, DOTD reminds motorists to use caution when traveling on roads and bridges,” a prepared statement from the DOTD read. The statement reminded drivers to avoid driving through standing or running water and to turn on headlights when using wipers.
