COFFEE TALK WITH GOD — Change is an inevitabe good
Published 7:00 pm Thursday, August 31, 2017
Change is nothing new. It’s not necessarily easy, but it is inevitable. Change happens moment-by-moment, day-by-day, year-by-year. The centuries prove how much society has changed and yet some things, though they evolve, never change. A caterpillar still goes into a cocoon before transformation into a butterfly. Robins still hatch into robins.
The nature of people? Some things change — others refuse to consider the possibility.

Getting up early in the morning has its benefits. The rush of day hasn’t started. That’s a change for me. Sometimes I think, “Why am I awake so early? What do I have to get up for?” Thoughts always turn to God and questions like, “Do I need to pray about something or for someone?” or “Lord, what do you have to say? What would you have me do?” More often than not, I roll over and fall back to sleep not remembering how much I love early mornings — with God.
As a young person still dreaming of romance, I always thought break of day was the most romantic time. A yearning unlike anticipating a beau coming to the door for a date. There was a quiet rest and trust imagining that time with a lover who felt as secure as I in our relationship. A time for just the two of us to give our hearts, minds and bodies to one another.
Writing today I didn’t know the story would go this direction in my coffee talk with God, but here it is, unfolding as a true confession. The reason I’m out-of-bed-at-the-break-of-dawn — I wanted to have coffee with God. The intimacy of early morning and my best friend.
I didn’t plan to write or pick the computer up, it just happened. That’s what creative people do — they commune with The Creator. The result is art, whether they realize it or not. They are an extension of expression from the heart of God — or, it comes from elsewhere.
Evil rears its head through creativity also. That’s why we have to be careful what we consume in music, art, dance, movies or performances. Spirit to spirit, heart to heart is communicated through the arts.
God loves art. Have you seen His painted skies? He loves music and rejoices over you with singing? The prophet Zephaniah tells us that in chapter three verse 17.

Our communion with him is also through song and worship. It says in Psalm 22:3, He is “enthroned on the praises of Israel.” The Psalms are filled with references of praise and adoration. In fact, they were the Top-150 of King David’s day — Words and music by David of Bethlehem with instructions to his chief musicians. The study of the arts in the scriptures is marvelous.
But today, I just want to rest in His presence and have a cup of coffee. Listen for His voice. His heart is always open to those with ears to hear. I’m comforted by His voice. I prefer the gentle whisper to His booming voice of disapproval. I’ve heard both. His personality is delightful. I love to share a laugh knowing fully well He is in heaven laughing as I finally recognize He has gone before me to prepare the way, or the delight He has in just loving me.
That’s what best friends and soul mates do. They spend time together. I love having coffee with God — anytime of the day.
