Winter sports kick in

The Catholic High Lady Panthers basketball team is one of several Teche Area squads playing on the hardwood this week along with soccer team on the pitch as winter sports kick in in the Teche Area.

With the prep football season in the Teche Area down to one game, next Thursday’s Division III State Championship game between Catholic High and Notre Dame set for 7 p.m. in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, high school basketball and soccer come to the forefront this week with a pair of local tournaments and a couple of rivalry games.

In boys basketball, Erath High plays host to a tournament with a lot of local flavor as six of the seven participating teams are from the Teche Area.

Starting Wednesday and going through Saturday, Catholic High, Highland Baptist, Delcambre, Loreauville and ESA along with host Erath wil join Vermilion Catholic in an early season tournament.

It kicks off Wednesday at 5 p.m. with Catholic High taking on District 7-2A rival Loreauville followed by host Erath and Vermilion Catholic at 6:30 p.m. and the final game of the first day will feature ESA taking on Delcambre.

The tournament continues with winner’s bracket semifinals Thursday at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and after a day off Friday, finishes up Saturday with consolaton bracket semifinals at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. 

The consolation championship is at 1:30 p.m. and the winner’s bracket final is set to follow.

The Delcambre girls will play host to it’s 14th Annual Lynette Viator Memorial Basketball Tournament starting Wednesday with Erath and Franklin joining host Delcambre and three other teams for the round robin affair.

The first day has Delcambre taking on Notre Dame at 5:30 p.m. and Northside and Vermilion Catholic starting at 7 p.m.

Thursday’s games feature Notre Dame and Northside at 4:30 p.m.; Vermilion Catholic and Comeaux at 6 p.m. and host Delcambre and Northside at 7:30 p.m.

Friday’s game have Comeaux and Franklin at 4:30 p.m.; Vermilion Catholic and Notre Dame at 6 p.m. and Erath and Franklin at 7:30 p.m.

The tournament concludes Saturday with Comeaux and Erath at 11 a.m.; Franklin and Northside at 12:30 p.m. and Delcambre and Erath at 2 p.m.

Other game during the week feature Assembly Christian at John Paul the Great and Abbeville at Franklin today in boys basketball. While in girls basketball, New Iberia travels to Carencro; Cecilia plays host to Westgate; Catholic High is at Opelousas Catholic; Jeanerette travels to Lake Arthur; Franklin is at Patterson; Morgan City is at West St. Mary and Vermilion Catholic travels to Erath.

Thursday, St. Martinville travels to the Hamilton Christian Tournament to face Wossman.

New Iberia plays host to Abbeville Friday and SMSH is at the Hamilton Christian Tournament.

In girls basketball Thursday, Erath travels to St. Thomas More; Franklin starts District 7-2A play at home against Academy of the Sacred Heart-Grand Coteau and Catholic High plays host to Cecilia.

In boys soccer today, New Iberia travels to cross-town rival Westgate;Catholic High travels to Teurlings; Beau Chene is at ESA and Abbeville is at St. Martinville,

In girls soccer today, Wesfgate is at New Iberia; Catholic High is at Lafayette and Beau Chene is at ESA.

NISH travels to Destrehan Thursday, while ESA, Erath, St. Martinville and Westgate will participate in the Copa Acadiana Tournament starting Friday.

In girls soccer later this week, Catholic High and Westgate will participate in the Copa Acadiana Tournament.
