N.I. City Council to decide on budget Tuesday

The New Iberia City Council will vote on several procedural resolutions related to the city’s budget at Tuesday’s meeting.

The council will vote on an amendment to a previous resolution made to approve $2.5 million in bonds for the New Iberia Police Department, which is being restarted from scratch, and New Iberia Fire Department.

The amendment will allow equipment to be purchased for the fire department with the bond money.

The council also will make an amendment to the budget that essentially makes room in the budget for the half-cent sales tax revenue that was approved in October for the police department and fire departments.

The amendment will appropriate funds for the creation of the NIPD.

Other budgetary ordinances approved at a meeting earlier this month will be voted on to put in an ordinance. Those include repairs to the Bayou Teche Museum and the paying of dues to the Acadiana Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Also Tuesday, the council will vote on a resolution declaring its intention to issue $3.5 million in taxable sewer revenue bonds for the purpose of constructing, replacing and improving New Iberia’s sewer system.

In other business, the council will vote on a resolution to enter into an agreement between the city and Iberia Parish Government for use of the Veterans Building.

Councilman David Broussard will give an update on a recent meeting of the city’s railroad committee, as well.

The City Council meeting is scheduled to take place at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday on the third floor of New Iberia City Hall.
