IPSB adjusts summer schedule

Summer School programs throughout Iberia Parish were approved by the Iberia Parish School Board during Wednesday night’s IBSP meeting. 

Iberia Parish Schools Superintendent-elect Carey Laviolette pointed out that most programs will follow the same routine as last year. However, this summer’s LEAP remediation and an added opportunity for high school students in the Jump Start program are changes in which to take note.

Laviolette said to a Textbook Education Committee this week that the dates for fourth- and eighth-grade summer remediation classes are scheduled for in July this summer rather than June due to the fact that the test scores needed from the state level will be delayed.

This year’s LEAP 2025 Summer Session for grades four and eight will take place 

Monday, July 9-Friday, July 13 at Westgate High School, breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Laviolette also noted that students who are trying to stay on track with their coursework for their high school’s Jump Start program are being given an opportunity to earn credit this summer.

“We are offering an opportunity for students to take the NCCER Core remediation course this summer,” Laviolette said. “This is  because if a student passes the (Jump Start) class  through the school year but does not meet the requirements of the industry based certification then they cannot continue on the (Jump Start) pathway.”

The Jump Start program is offered to high school students to allow them to earn credentials in a chosen industry or trade as an alternative to attending a regular four-year college or university.

The NCCER Core Certification Summer Class for Iberia Parish students will be offered.

July 9th-July 13th. Breakfast and Lunch will be provided for those classes as well.

Other summer school programs approved for the parish are as follows:

• End of Course Summer Session (Grades 9-11) Monday, May 28-Friday, June 15

• Secondary Summer School (Grades 9-12 )Wednesday, May 30-Friday, June 29

• Elementary Summer School (Grades 2-8) Wednesday, May 30-Friday, July 13

• LEP Summer Session Grades (PreK-12) Monday, June 4-Friday, June 22.

• Math In The Middle (Grades 7 & 8) Monday, June 4-Friday, June 8.

• Extended School Year Summer Services-ESYS Monday, June 11-Friday, July 20.

The last day of school in Iberia Parish for the 2017-2018 school year is May 24.
