CHS leads area contingent into the postseason

The Catholic High Panthers, fresh off of another 20-win season and the District 7-2A championship, lead a contingent of nine teams in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association baseball playoffs with the release of the brackets in all Classes and Divisions Sunday.

CHS finished as the highest seed of all the local teams to make the postseason. The Panthers (22-7) are the No. 3 seed in Division III and will play host to No. 14 seed Patrick Taylor School of Science and Technology (9-17) in a best of three series that starts Friday at 6 p.m. at CHS.
The second game will be played Saturday around noon and if a third game is necessary, it will be played Saturday afternoon.
Since there are only 16 teams in the select school playoffs there is no traditional first round and all games are best of three series with the winner advancing to the quarterfinal round.
If the Panthers win, they will play host to the winner of the best of three series between No. 6 Riverside Academy and No. 11 seed Episcopal High of Baton Rouge.
The semifinals at the state baseball tournament in Division III are set for Thursday, May 10 with the state championship set for Saturday, May 12 at 5 p.m.
Catholic High’s district also sent three other teams into the playoffs this year.

The Loreauville Tigers (18-11) finished as the fifth seed in Class 2A and will play host to No. 28 seed Beekman Charter School (11-15) from Bastrop Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the first round.
All first round game in the non-select division in Class 2A are single games. The winner of Loreauville/Beekman Charter will face the winner of the 12/21 contest between Lake Arthur and South Plaquemines in a best of three series in the second round which would start Friday.
Also in Class 2A, the Delcambre Panthers (12-14) finished as the 18th seed and will travel to No. 15 seed Delhi Charter in Delhi today at 5 p.m. in the first round.
The winner of that game will face the winner of the 2/31 contest between Many and Port Allen in a best of three series starting Friday.
Finally in Class 2A, Franklin (10-18) was the 30th seed and will hit the road to face No. 3 seed Welsh (16-12) today at 6 p.m. with the winner facing the 14/19 winner between Rosepine and North Caddo in a best of three series in the second round also starting Friday.
In Class 5A, New Iberia Senior High (19-11) finished as the 11th seed and will place host to No. 22 seed Covington (20-13) in the first round Tuesday at 6 p.m. with the winner facing the winner of the 6/27 contest between Sulphur and Airline in a best of three series in the second round starting Friday.
If Airline would upset Sulphur in the first round, the NISH would play host to the best of three series, like last season when Walker stunned Destrehan in the first round and the Jackets played host to the second round series.
In Class 4A, Westgate (11-21) finished as the 31st seed and will travel to face No. 2 seed Tioga (24-8) Tuesday at 6 p.m. The winner of the game will face the winner of the 15/18 contest between Minden and Warren Easton in a best of three series in the second round.
In Class 3A, Erath (18-13) finished as the ninth seed and will play host to District 8-3A rival and 24th seed Kaplan (9-20) in the first round Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. with the winner facing the winner of the 8/25 contest between West Feliciana and Patterson in a best of three series in the second round.
In Class A, Centerville (9-8) finished as the 13th seed and will play host to No. 20 seed South Cameron (4-14) in the first round. Game time for the contest hasn’t been announced. The winner of the game will face No. 4 seed Logansport in the second round.
Logansport received a first round bye and in Class A, there is only single games in the postseason, no best of three series after the first round.
Finally, in Division V, ESA (6-17) finished as the sixth seed and will travel to No. 3 seed Claiborne Christian (12-12) in West Monroe in the quarterfinals. The winner advances to the state tournament and will face the winner of Family Christian and Northside Christian in the semifinals Wednesday, May 9 at Noon.
All semifinals and finals will be played at McMurray Park in Sulphur.
