Voters cast ballots early

Before the Dec. 8 election throughout Louisiana, residents from all over the state are heading to their respective registrar of voters offices to early vote for the few items on the ballot.

In the Teche Area, local residents in Iberia, St. Martin and St. Mary parishes continued early voting Wednesday for a Louisiana Secretary of State’s race between Kyle Ardoin and Gwen Collins-Greenup, plus a few local propositions.

Iberia Parish’s five-day total in the early voting period is 1,297. St. Martin Parish has 1,396 while St. Mary Parish leads the way in the area with 2,324.

Iberia only has one item on the ballot, the Secretary of State election. A smaller number of voters has reflected the small ballot. By closing time Thursday, 298 people turned out to early vote in Iberia. Of those, 219 were people who showed up in-person to the Iberia Registrar of Voters, and 79 were votes sent in through the mail.

St. Martin Parish has an additional election on the ballot, a District 3 St. Martin Parish School Board race between Democrat Edna Mitchell“MaMa” Johnson and Independent Robert Thibodeaux.

There were 219 early voters showed up total Wednesday in St. Martin Parish. Two hundred and ten of those were in-person votes and nine were votes submitted through mail.

St. Mary Parish by far has the largest number of ballots. A St. Mary Parish Sheriff runoff election is between Scott Anslum and Blaise Smith, as well as a coroner’s race pitting Lianter Albert against Eric Melancon.

The number of St. Mary early votes were double that of Iberia and St. Martin Wednesday. There were 459 votes total, with 402 in-person votes and 57 sent by mail.

Early voting, which began this past Saturday, continues through Saturday. Voters can vote early by showing up to your local Registrar of Voters office from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
