St. Martinville, VC set holiday tournaments

- Highland Baptist’s boys and girls will play in the Vermilion Catholic Yuletide Classic next week.
Two big area tournament will take the main stage next week as St. Martinville plays host to its annual Holiday Shootout and Vermilion Catholic will play host to its annual Yuletide Classic and local teams will be featured prominently in both.
The Holiday Shootout is one of the top tournaments in the state that usually pulls in teams from the New Orleans, Baton Rouge. Laek Charles and Alexandria areas.
This year’s version of the Holiday Shootout has more of a Lafayette-area flair, however.
New Iberia Senior High (9-4), Westgate (3-3), Franklin (6-5) and Jeanerette (3-7) will all participate in the tournament, which runs from Wednesday, Dec. 26, through Saturday, Dec. 29.
In the opening round of the tournament set for Wednesday, Jeanerette will battle Westgate at 3:30 p.m., Franklin faces Cecilia (4-5) at 11 a.m., NISH will face off against J.S. Clark (4-4) at 6:30 p.m. and host SMSH plays Church Point (3-10) in the final game at 8 p.m.
Other games on the first day include Breaux Bridge (11-1) and Jennings (6-6) at 12:30 p.m.; Hamilton Christian (5-5) vs. Peabody (13-2) at 2 p.m. and Patterson (6-2) and Tioga (9-4) at 5 p.m.
The tournament continues with winners’ bracket and consolation bracket games Thursday and Friday before the final day of games Saturday with the tournament championship game set for 4:30 p.m.
In Abbeville, VC’s Yuletide Classic features both a boys’ and girls’ bracket. The tournament gets underway Wednesday and goes through the championship round Saturday.
In the boys’ bracket, Highland Baptist (4-4) and Erath (2-8) join host VC (5-2), Marksville (3-14), Notre Dame (2-1), Fontainebleau (3-10), Covenant Christian (1-5) and Pineville (8-3) while in the girls’ bracket, Highland Baptist (8-1), Erath (3-10) and Delcambre (5-6) will compete against Acadiana (10-5), Kaplan (8-7), North Vermilion (5-4), Lafayette (8-4), Abbeville (4-6), Gueydan (8-7), St. Thomas More (13-2) and host VC (14-2) for the tournament championship.
On the opening day, Highland Baptist and Lafayette High girls kick off the tournament at 11 a.m. followed by Abbeville and Gueydan girls at 12:30 p.m.; Delcambre and Kaplan girls at 2 p.m.; Erath and STM girls at 3:30 p.m.; Marksville and Notre Dame boys at 5 p.m.; host VC and North Vermilion girls at 6:30 p.m. and the final game of the night will be Covenant Christian and Pineville boys at 8 p.m.
Winner’s bracket and consolation bracket games continue on Thursday. Fontainebleau and Erath’s boys play at 5 p.m. and host VC and Highland Baptist boys play at 8 p.m. in opening games.
The tournament ends Saturday with games starting at 11 a.m. and continuing through the girls championship at 7 p.m. and the boys championship at 8:30 p.m.
