DELCAMBRE — The town of Delcambre is still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Barry as slow drainage became a problem for some parts of town.

Although the main thoroughfares in Delcambre were mostly dry, local officials and residents reported, the area near Bayou Carlin was covered with water from this past week’s storm.

“It’s just draining that we’re having a problem with,” Delcambre Police Chief James Broussard said. “It’s taking a while to drain.”

The Shrimp Festival Building was flooded as a result of Hurricane Barry, as well as the residential neighborhoods surrounding the area.

Broussard said there were no cases in which someone had to be rescued from a home, and only one case he can recall where water had gotten inside a home.

A curfew was put in place Sunday as high water levels became a constant threat throughout the weekend.

Hurricane Barry brought strong winds and rainfall to southwest Louisiana, hitting the Teche Area the hardest in Iberia, St. Martin and St. Mary parishes.

The storm’s high winds left the majority of Cleco customers in the area out of service, with some still waiting to get their power restored.

The neighboring city of Erath also experienced significant flooding as a result of Barry, Erath officials said, with minor coastal flood warnings being issued in the area all the way into Monday night.
