Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has pledged $50 million to youth 4-H programs. The donation is the largest in the organization’s 120-year history.
Scott is a novelist and philanthropist who was married to Jeff Bezos, helping him start Amazon in 1994. When they divorced in 2018, she became one of the world’s wealthiest women, with a current estimated worth of $45.5 billion, according to Forbes magazine. Still, she’s given away her wealth at an unprecedented rate, donating 9 billion in just two years. Scott has also signed the Giving Pledge, a public promise to give away most of her riches.
4-H is the youth development arm of the Cooperative Extension System, a federal program that supports American agriculture. It offers mentoring and educational activities with an agricultural angle. Some form of 4-H programming is available in every county and parish in the country, according to the organization. With 6 million members, it’s larger than the Girl and Boy Scouts combined.
“This extraordinary gift is a rare and special occurrence,” says Krysta Harden, National 4-H Council Board Chair and President and CEO of the U.S. Dairy Export Council. “With such a significant gift comes great responsibility. We will engage our stakeholders to ensure these resources lift the diverse voices of young people and create equitable and inclusive opportunities for this generation, and many future generations to come.”
