The New Iberia Police Department arrested a man who allegedly robbed a convenience store on North Lewis Street last month.

According to a prepared statement, NIPD officers responded to the 200 block of North Lewis Street on Sept. 19 in reference to a convenience store robbery.

The initial investigation revealed a male subject entered the store with several items concealed inside a backpack. The male approached the cashier, said he had a gun and demanded cigarettes and money.

After receiving both, he fled the area on a bicycle.

Responding officers were able to obtain a photograph of the male from video surveillance footage. Shortly after, officers were able to identify the male from past encounters.

The male was identified as Bradley James Lewis, and with the positive identification an arrest warrant was obtained for charges of first-degree robbery and theft.

According to the statement, a cohesive effort between team members with multiple sections of the NIPD led to Lewis being apprehended without incident around midnight on Sept. 30.

“This teamwork between members of the New Iberia Police Department and continued community involvement is the foundation of solving crime in our great city and has greatly contributed to our 81% solve rate on crimes such as this and will continue to make a difference in combating crimes in the future,” according to the statement.
