- Incumbent Brooke Marcotte will have a second term after being the lone candidate for District 1, one of several unopposed seats on the New Iberia City Council.
The candidates for the Nov. 5 election is set after those seeking office qualified this week for several local, state and federal governmental positions that will be on the ballot in four months.
In New Iberia, Mayor Freddie DeCourt will be running unopposed as he seeks another term in office. This will mark DeCourt’s third term in office since first being elected in 2016.
Mayor Pro Tem Ricky Gonsoulin also qualified for his second term in the position, and will be running against Deidre Ledbetter. Ledbetter is current councilwoman and has served two terms on the City Council for District 4.
Other contested seats include District 2, where departing Councilman Marlon Lewis’ seat is attempting to be filled by political candidates Rosalind Bobb, Ben Meyers and Warren White.
In District 3, former Parish Councilman Troy Comeaux will be facing community activist Phanat Xanamane and Roy Crews III for the open seat left vacant following the end of Councilman David Broussard’s term.
District 5, an open district after Councilwoman Deedy Johnson-Reid chose not to run again, will have five candidates seeking the position. Those include former Councilwoman Sherry Guidry, Krystal Boyance, Richard Phillips and Ron Davis.
Several spots on the council are already guaranteed after District 1, District 4 and District 6 all had a single candidate qualify.
Incumbent Brooke Marcotte will have a second term after being the lone candidate for District 1, while David Merrill, who previously served as a councilman in District 4, will once again take up the position after being the only candidate who qualified as well.
Former Mayor Pro Tem Dan Doerle, who has served as an interim councilman in District 6 following the departure of Dustin Suire, will be serving a full term in the district as well after being the only District 6 resident to qualify.
In Delcambre, Mayor Pam Blakely is facing opponent Christopher “Tipper” Esponge in the November race. There were also three candidates vying for the Delcambre chief of police position, with candidates Ivan McIntyre, Brady Segura and Perry Shaw qualifying this week.
Another prominent local race will be the one for Iberia Parish Tax Assessor, which was left open following the resignation of Taylor Barras after being tapped for Gov. Jeff Landry’s administration. Interim Assessor Ashlie Spiker is seeking to start a fresh term in the position, with opponents David Groner and Raymond “Shoe-Do” Lewis also qualifying.
U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins will be seeking another term with only three candidates choosing to run against the longtime congressman. Priscilla Gonzalez, from Lafayette; “Xan” John, from Lafayette and Sadi Summerlin from Westlake are also running for the congressional seat this election season.
