After three months Jeanerette has a new police chief following interim Chief Terrance Moore’s appointment to the position Monday night.
Moore, who began the job following a request from former Chief Dusty Vallot, said he has already taken steps to make the Jeanerette Police Department more “proactive instead of reactive” since his time as interim chief, and would be continuing that in his new position.
In the 90-days that Moore has served as chief, several moves forward have been made that include new uniforms for JPD officers, several arrests and even some future help from Louisiana State Police on the way.
Moore added that the police department had recovered drugs like crack cocaine and Soboxone strips in Jeanerete. He also added that he was working on acquiring more units for the JPD,though that project may be longer term.
“We’re shooting for eight (units),” he said. “If not, we’ll settle for six .”
In regards to the recent homicide in Jeanerette, Moore said four arrests were made that included two juveniles and two adults. The department has seen major shakeups since January that include the injury of one officer as well as two dispatchers who have had to take time off.
Moore said he was working on the issues, and quickly got a large round of applause after his selection as the new chief of police.
“I think you’re doing a wonderful job,” Alderwoman Charlene Moore said.
The board unanimously approved the appointment.
